The Upper Room summer program runs from June 16th-August 8th.
In previous years, the average reading increase for Upper Room participants was 6 months - or 2.5 times the amount of time spent in class.
When working with volunteers and reading independently, students test their reading comprehension after completing each book. In the computer lab, sudents take five or ten question quizzes over each book they read. These quiz results are closely monitored in order to better assess which students need more help and which are improving.
In the morning, students work with volunteer tutors on early reading skills including phonetics, word recognition and reading comprehension. In upper grades, teachers also cover elementary mathematics.
In the afternoon, students participate in a variety of activities. These activities include visits to swim parks, gymnastics, and lessons in art, music and dance. The Upper Room prides itself on providing a diverse and enriching experience for its students. Furthermore, it is the intention of the Upper Room to make our Summer Academic Camp available to interested families, regardless of their financial situations. Therefore, the Summer Academic Camp is offered free of charge to all enrolling families.
During Summer 2006, students were eligible to earn $150 for a combination of both maintaining good quiz scores and good attendance. If any student, throughout the Summer Academic Camp maintained a "C" average on their reading comprehension quizzes, he or she received a $75 gift card at the conclusion of the program. Additionally, if any student missed one of less day of school throughout the Summer Academic Camp, he or she received a $75 check at the conclusion of the program.
For the 2008 Summer Academic Camp, Academic/Attendance Incentives will again be offered. Students who miss no more than 2 school days or 12 school hours and show academic growth will receive a $100 gift card.
