To Volunteer in our After School Program, please click here.
The primary goal of the After School Program is to help children improve their reading ability and get them at or above grade-level, as many of the students in the urban core of Kansas City, MO are below grade level.
The After School Program is made up a few components, including:
- Free hot meal: All students involved in the after school program receive a hot meal for free.
- Reading Instruction: We use certified classroom teachers to deliver the Accelerated Reader program for literacy instruction, math practice and homework help. The program is provided to K – 8th graders at no cost to the families. Youth counselors and volunteer tutors provide individualized instruction.
- Homework Help: Youth counselors and volunteer tutors will provide one-on-one homework help to students as needed.
Our Year-Round Model
We provide reading instruction, homework help, a daily meal, and much more – all free of cost to the family. The program is Monday – Friday after school until 6:00 pm. We track the students’ progress each week. Since we will have the children all school year, we then recruit them to join in our summer program. By working with the same children year round, we improve the students within the neighborhood elementary school. Improving the neighborhood school will also improve the neighborhood, becoming a neighborhood of choice for the community.
Our program is open to all students, regardless of family income. Our students are not required to pass a reading level. We employ teachers who speak multiple languages to work with parents that do not speak English as a first language. We try our best to accommodate all of our applicants. We do not turn any students away until our capacity has been met.
