Our Purpose

The Swope Corridor Renaissance/Upper Room Inc is a neighborhood-based non-for-profit organization providing high-quality out-of-school education programs to low-income families in the urban area of Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS. Our mission is “Education for Life.”

Opened in 1999, the Upper Room began as a Summer Academic Camp to serve some of the many school age children that reside within the 64130 zip code.  Since its inception, the Upper Room has grown to serve thousands of families and youth.  We have several important programs:

  • The After School Program for K-8th Graders, serving more than 1,000 students per year
  • The eight week Summer Academic Camp for K-8th Graders, serving almost 3,000 students each summer
  • The Even Start Daycare Program for children 6 weeks – 4 years old, recently expanded to hold 22 more infants
  • The GED Program for mothers who want to complete their High School Equivalency, graduating 10 women in 2010

As the Upper Room has grown, so has its locations.  We now have 27 sites across the city to better serve our ever growing community.
