Our Purpose

The Swope Corridor Renaissance/Upper Room Inc is a neighborhood-based non-for-profit organization providing high-quality out-of-school education programs to low-income families in the urban area of Kansas City, MO. Our mission is “Education for Life.”

Opened in 1999, the Upper Room began as a Summer Academic Camp to serve some of the many school age children that reside within the 64130 zip code. Since its inception, the Upper Room has grown to serve thousands of families and youth. We have several important programs:

  • The After School Program for K-8th Graders, serving more than 1,000 students per year
  • The eight week Summer Academic Camp for K-8th Graders, serving almost 3,000 students each summer
  • The Child Development Center for children 6 weeks – currently serving over 50 children, and encouraging early literacy skills among the toddlers
  • The GED Program for students who want to complete their High School Equivalency, graduating 11 students in 2012

As the Upper Room has grown, so has its locations. We now have over 25 sites across the city to better serve our ever growing community.
